Avoid Tool Bars
All tool bars consume energy from your pc. Even well known named ones like yahoo and google.
Some tools bars are even infectious with adware. Ask tool bar, and MyWebSearch to name a couple. A lot of times, they get slipped into an install for another program you are installing. Watch for them.
If you do get a tool bar installed without your permission, use REVO UnInstaller to get it out of you system ASAP.
If you take out Ask, or MyWebSearch, run all of your scans to make sure you don't have any adware left behind.

Screen Savers
If it's pretty and Free, there's usually a bigger price hidden in the download. They usually contain adware, or maybe even a virus.

Installing programs
When you download a program, and start the installation, watch for checked, check boxes that include other programs such as a free security scanner, or a free toolbar. Go slow and read what you are getting. I always uncheck all of these items that I didn't ask for.

Startup Programs
When you install new software, many programs will be setup to run when you start your pc.
I suspect they do this so when you open that particular file, it opens quick.
But, you might not even use some program for several days or weeks. Therefore, they don't need to be running at startup. They might take a little longer to open, but the energy saved, is energy available for other tasks. Turning off un-needed programs will make your pc run faster.

Run Your Scans
You should run your scans by-weekly, or monthly, depending on how much you use your pc.
ATF, MRU Blaster, and C-Cleaner can be ran every day, just to keep your pc running lean and mean.
If you notice a slow down in speed or performance, or, if you notice your pc taking longer than usual to shut down, it's a good indication of something bad running on your pc, and you should run your scans.
For the long running scans, such as Malewarebytes, Spybot, or Superantispyware, you can start it before going out, or going to bed, and finish it later.
